The Altengarde breeding born in 1999 thanks to the passion and the strong motivation which have represented the stimulus to take up a professional and formative course, a course as exacting as tiring but thanks to which today the name of Altengarde is linked to the concept of seriousness and competence.
However, don’t change principles by which happen the selection of this wonderful breed, principles that take into consideration fundamental elements such as the health, the character, the typicality that are not in conflict with the evolutionary program of the breeding.
During the selection of examples to get in the reproduction, Altengarde searches for a series of morphological and functional peculiarities, that concern both the aesthetical and the character aspect, including the health; examples present in the breeding are submitted to thorough analysis, first of all the dysplasia of the hip (Hip test) and of the elbow, also the “oculopatia”, that is a test of eyes to check there are not hereditary defects, and the echocardiography to assure the lack of murmur, cardiac arrhythmia, dilation ... (and so on) during the reproduction.
Altengarde admits only elements that fall within the degree 0 until the degree B (0, A, B).
After to have determined the perfect health of the subject after the thorough analysis, the fundamental property is the character; the Altengarden’s character represents the essence, the determinant parameter to allow the coupling of any kind of stallion.
The project of breeding, that is developing during these years, born to the idea of “character rehabilitation of the breed”, obviously it doesn’t go to the evolution of the species’ (and in particular of this kind of dog) cost.
For the course of my breeding I try to find the perfect meeting between functionality, bent and beauty; it is true that this kind of dog expresses the history, the friendship, the harmony of its movements and the vigour of its strides, but it is also true that remain a useful dog. Altengarde doesn’t forget this aspect but at the same time doesn’t share the policy of sales and business policy, that promotes a dog with lacking aptitudes and approximate typicalities.
The choice of some blood lines and of some method of selection allowed to our breeding to win in the 2007 the juniors category of the French championship of breeding!
Altengarde loves to work for improvement of the breed, whether for morphological or character results.

Indications about puppies:
All ours examples leave the breeding after a clinical - veterinary report with the relative certificate of health, all vaccinations effectuated (in relation to the destination that puppy has to arrive), the microchip and the copy of father and mother’s documents.
Puppies are granted from all points of view and they are in possession of the registration with relative transfer of title and passport.
The breeding
The Dogue de Bordeaux, as everybody knows, is a molossian and such as it is introduced in the group 2, that is in the group of dogs defined such as for “Watch and Defence”; for this reason for elements of this kind of breed we expect that carry up, when is necessary, guardian or defender’s duty. In my opinion is not necessary to remind that this kind of dog since fifteen years ago was employed by the French police (but in reality was a failure weather in intentions or in technical employments; in fact the Dogue de Bordeaux’s functional destination of use was in relation to masonries, as hunting watch, as guardian in big farms or of precious carts of that time, overcrowded of meat.
Well, it is true that at the basis of a breed’s survival there is the diffusion, but it is also true that we have to reflect if today still we speak about a breed whom we fell in love!
Unfortunately in the 99 % of cases today these wonderful examples show shyness, shadiness, insecurity, often distrust (independently if it is well cultivated the social phase); we often are before subjects which are introversive and incapable of express and interact with the external world and this brings the subject to doesn’t develop the duty for which it was selected.
A subject well selected and with a strong character is
- a self – confident dog,
- a dog that naturally will defence its territory and its resources together with its pack,
(considering also the genetic material that we have at ours’ disposal and the centennial influence of man in breeding) and the breeder will must to entrust it to people who have the ability to bring it up and to manage it, even if a sure and determined dog is at the same time reliable and balanced.
Considering all remarks made till now, our breeding trip cannot overlook the morphological – functional aspect: in fact, a well constructed dog is a functional dog, that trots and drives in a good way, that succeeds in breathing and cooling the air, that succeeds in having an ideal power-to-weight ratio, efficiency and recovery.
From the search of character: in my opinion “the dog of character” is a concept linked to the breed we take into consideration.
The Dogue de Bordeaux is a dog for defence and not for guard, it is motivated by the jealousy and the affection that it shows for its own things, such as people, the house, the car and so on ... In my opinion, a Dogue of character is a sure, bold, peaceful dog, also capable to exploit at best environmental and genetic conditions of the territory in which it lives.
Everything cannot leave out of consideration the concept of health:
all subjects that we test must to have breed’s bents, prominent character gifts and solid nerves, they have to be social and peasant dogs, because everything lose a sense if we are in the light of a dog with genetic defects that implicate the health. For Altengarde dysplasia, “oculopatia” and echocardiography are obligatory.
This preamble gazes to bring out two aspects: the first, the Dogue de Bordeaux is a breed that has suffered a lot and is suffering also today the commercialization and it is been denaturalized of a lot of its fascinating characteristics; the second, if we select a Dogue in relation to what the standard suggest, we can look in it certainly a beautiful dog, also fascinating, endowed of character and capable to develop the job for which we desire (at least in the majority of cases) a dog of this breed.
Always considering principles so far explained, it tries to demonstrate that this kind of dog, if selected according the respect of standard and training with a correct method, could reveal a dog that could work whether according a sportive perspective or according a real employment ... in fact, some of ours Altengarde subjects live at home and were like a nanny to children, others are employed as guardian and others work in institutes of vigilance about for two years. Will know by intuition that my passion for the training and for the work with the dog have incited myself to a difficult and, at the
same time, meticulous formative course which for the moment is a great professional satisfaction to me and it brings me to an important recognition, obtained the 3rd February, 2008, that is Official Figurant SACC.
An only right THANKS is for my big master Mauro Passarelli, how saw to my formation as preparer and figurant from 1998 to 2005 personally. During these years I had the opportunity to collaborate to prestigious structures and to prepare a lot of subjects for breeding championships of different breed, such as Dobermann, Pastore Tedesco and Rottweiler.
Some years now I gets ahead with my technician ideas and I try to use them experimentally in this breed. Today I am preparing an element of my breeding and I hope that it can give a reason to my theories.
I hope also that it will be possible to see beautiful, healthy subjects and also good in their work and everything don’t contraindicate the possibility to have a true and sincere friend at ours’ side.
